I am an Activist. I am Also a Feminist.
Though it took me a while to realize it, by nitpicking at seemingly trivial comments that perpetuate racist and sexist dogmas I have become my own brand of activism. I believe that there is not just one way to be an activist. By challenging the normalized beliefs that my friends and family say on a daily basis, I am participating in micro-activism.
This realization has also inspired me to embrace feminism and all of its complexity. While it is easier to say that I am a feminist because I believe that men and women are equal, this does not completely capture my beliefs regarding the equality of the sexes. I firmly believe that to discuss feminism is to also discuss the overlap of different systems of oppression. In other terms, I am only interested in discussing feminist agendas if they also address how class, race, and sexuality give certain groups of women more privilege than others. I am a feminist because I do not think my color, sex, or sexuality should determine my trajectory in life. |
#OperationExposeTheMedia
As my gender studies social activism project, my group and I chose to create a video that focuses on what the average PHAer thinks about the portrayals of different genders and races in the media. Below you can find our video and our Theory, Vision, and Action for creating change in the media.
