The Evolution of FeminismWhen the average BEYhive fan hears the word "feminist," of course the first person they think of is the Queen a.k.a Yoncé aka Beyoncé. While Beyoncé is undoubtedly the feminist icon of my generation, the women's movement is bigger than Bey.
The women's movement of the past and present is about women of all shapes, sizes, and ethnicities being liberated in every aspect of their lives. From getting the right to vote during the first wave of feminism, to the sexual revolution of the second wave of feminism, women before me have been fighting for my right to be treated as an empowered being for centuries. For this reason, I think that students should be required to take classes like gender studies and sociology for the simple fact that I don't think learning about institutionalized sexism and racism should be optional. Learning about the way social institutions function is essential to reconstructing our society. |
